Dr. Navakanta Bhat


Dr. Navakanta Bhat has been a faculty at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore since 1999, where he is currently a Professor in the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering. He has made significant contributions in the areas of Nanoelectronics and Sensors technology. He was instrumental in creating the National Nanofabrication Center at IISc Bangalore, which has been benchmarked against the best university facilities in the world.

He is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering. He is the Editor of IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices, a flagship journal of IEEE EDS society. He served as the Chairman of the Human Resource Development and Infrastructure committee of the National Program on Micro and Smart Systems. He was the member of the committee set up by the Principal Scientific Advisor to Govt. of India to recommend strategies to develop semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India. He is also the member of the National Innovation Council in Nanoelectronics.

He is a Stanford alumnus, with Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. He has rich experience in translating innovative technologies into manufacturing, while working at Motorola’s Advanced Products R&D Lab under the Networking and Computing Systems group in USA. He served as the key member of CMOS technology development group in developing PowerPC chips, which were used in Apple Macintosh. He has more than 200 research publications and 10 US patents issued to his credit, with 14 patents pending. It had been his vision to bring a revolution in the field of medical diagnosis by incorporating nano-technology and this culminated in the idea of PathShodh Healthcare. He was on sabbatical leave for a year, to establish PathShodh on a firm footing, by serving as the Chief Executive Officer. He continues to be the non-executive Chairman of Board of Directors.
